Safely Deleting Package Groups

Safely Deleting Package Groups

The Problem

You've discontinued a package size or container type, but you're worried that deleting the package group might break old orders or mess up your inventory records. Maybe you switched from 12oz cans to 16oz cans, or you stopped using a specific keg size. What happens to all those past sales?

The Solution

BarSight intelligently handles package group deletion based on whether it's been used. When you delete a package group that's been used in batches, orders, or inventory, it's marked as "offline" instead of being permanently deleted. This means it won't appear when creating new products or orders, but your historical data stays completely intact.

How It Works

There are two scenarios when deleting a package group:

Scenario 1: Unused Package Group

If you created a package group but never actually used it in any batches or inventory, BarSight will permanently delete it. No harm done—it was never part of your records.

Scenario 2: Used Package Group (Most Common)

If the package group has been used, BarSight takes a smarter approach:

  • Historical orders remain intact - Past customer orders still show the correct package type
  • Existing inventory is still visible - Products already packaged in this container still appear in stock and can be sold
  • New selections are blocked - The package group won't appear when creating new preorders or selecting packages for new batches
  • Autocomplete still works - When adding items to orders, existing inventory with the deleted package group still shows up in search results

How to Delete a Package Group

  1. Navigate to Brewery → Settings → Package Settings
  2. Click on the package group you want to remove
  3. Click the Delete button at the top of the form
  4. Confirm the deletion

What You'll Notice After Deletion

  • Creating new preorders: The deleted package group won't appear in the dropdown list
  • Viewing existing inventory: Products packaged with the deleted group still display correctly with the package name
  • Fulfilling old orders: You can still complete orders that were placed before deletion
  • Adding to new orders: Existing stock with the deleted package can still be added to customer orders via autocomplete search

Pro Tip

This is perfect for phasing out discontinued packages! Delete the package group to prevent new batches from using it, but you can still sell through your remaining inventory without any issues. Your historical reports and order records stay accurate.
