Record Batch Loss to Track Efficiency
The Problem
You started with 500 liters of wort, but somehow you're only packaging 465 liters. Where did 35 liters go? Was it evaporation during the boil? Trub loss after fermentation? Sampling throughout the process? Without tracking loss at each step, you have no idea where your beer is disappearing or how to improve your efficiency.
The Solution
The Record Loss feature lets you document volume loss at any brew step—spillage, evaporation, trub removal, sampling, transfers, whatever the cause. Track losses over time to identify patterns, calculate true batch yields, and find opportunities to improve your brewing efficiency.
How to Use It
- Open the batch where loss occurred
- Click Operations in the toolbar
- Select Record Loss
- Enter loss details:
- Volume Lost: Amount that's gone (e.g., 5L)
- Brew Step: Where the loss happened (Boil, Transfer, Fermentation, etc.)
- Reason: Why it happened (Evaporation, Trub, Spillage, Sampling)
- Date: When the loss occurred
- Click Record Loss
BarSight adjusts your batch volume automatically and creates an audit trail. Over time, you can analyze loss patterns by step and reason to identify inefficiencies.

Pro Tip
Be consistent with your loss tracking—record every loss, no matter how small. After brewing 10-20 batches, review your loss data to find patterns. If you're losing 10L to trub every fermentation, maybe it's time to invest in a conical fermenter or adjust your transfer technique.
