Split a Batch to Test Different Fermentation Approaches
The Problem
You've brewed a beautiful pale ale, but you want to test two different dry hop schedules to see which produces better aroma. Or maybe you want to ferment half at 18°C and half at 20°C to compare flavor profiles. Creating two separate batches from scratch doubles your ingredient costs and brew day time. There's got to be a better way to experiment.
The Solution
The Split Batch feature lets you divide one batch into multiple smaller batches after brewing. Each split can follow a different fermentation path—different temperatures, hop schedules, yeast strains, or conditioning times. Perfect for A/B testing, experimental brewing, and creating variations of the same base beer.
How to Use It
- Brew your batch as normal up to the point where you want to split (usually after transfer to fermenters)
- Open the batch detail view
- Click Operations in the toolbar
- Select Split Batch
- Enter split details:
- Number of splits: How many batches to create (usually 2-3)
- Volume for each split: How much goes into each new batch
- Names: Label each split (e.g., "Pale Ale - Citra Dry Hop", "Pale Ale - Mosaic Dry Hop")
- Click Split Batch
BarSight creates separate batch records for each split. You can now process them independently—different fermentation temperatures, hop additions, packaging dates, and more.

Pro Tip
Document your experiment goals in each split's batch notes so you remember what you were testing. When the batches are done, compare tasting notes and choose the winner to become your standard recipe going forward.
Learn More
After testing variations, you might want to copy your winning recipe to create future batches. You can also learn how to record brew log entries to track fermentation data for each split.
