Setting Up Multiple Cash Registers

Setting Up Multiple Cash Registers

The Problem

You have multiple cash drawers—one at the bar, one in the taproom, maybe one in the kitchen for petty cash. Each needs separate tracking, but you only see one register in BarSight's cash module. How do you manage multiple floats without mixing transactions?

The Solution

BarSight supports multiple cash registers (floats) per location. Each float has its own opening balance, transaction history, daily balances, and reconciliation records. Switch between registers with a dropdown selector to keep bar cash, taproom cash, and petty cash completely separate.

How to Set Up Additional Cash Registers

Note: Cash register setup currently requires database configuration. Contact BarSight support to add additional floats to your location.

Once additional floats are added by support, you'll see them in the cash module:

  1. Navigate to Logbook → Cash Transactions
  2. Look for the Float Selector dropdown at the top
  3. Select which register you want to view/manage
  4. Set the opening balance for each float (see Setting Your Opening Float)

How Multiple Floats Work

Float Selection

The float dropdown appears on every cash-related page. Your selection is remembered via browser cookie, so you don't have to keep selecting it. Each user can work with different floats simultaneously.

Independent Transaction Histories

Each float maintains completely separate records:

  • Opening balance (starting amount)
  • Daily balances (starting/ending each day)
  • Cash In/Out transactions
  • Loan tracking
  • Reconciliation history

Default Float and Sales Integration

Important: Only the default float (first one created) receives POS sales data. Secondary floats only track manual Cash In/Out transactions—no sales sync.

This prevents duplicate sales reporting when you have multiple cash drawers. Your main register gets POS sales, while secondary registers (petty cash, second till) track only manual entries.

Common Use Cases

Bar and Taproom Registers

  • Default Float: Bar register (receives POS sales)
  • Secondary Float: Taproom register (manual transactions only)

Main Till and Petty Cash

  • Default Float: Main cash drawer (receives POS sales)
  • Secondary Float: Petty cash fund (expenses and reimbursements)

Multiple Locations

Each location can have multiple floats. Configure floats per location in Settings → Locations.

Pro Tip

Name your floats descriptively when they're created (e.g., "Bar Register", "Taproom Till", "Petty Cash"). This makes it immediately obvious which drawer you're viewing when switching between them.
