Working with Batch Splits and Blends

Working with Batch Splits and Blends

As your brewery grows, you'll often need to divide a batch into separate products or combine multiple batches together. BarSight's split and blend features give you the flexibility to manage these scenarios while maintaining accurate volume tracking and complete batch history.

Splitting a Batch

Splitting a batch allows you to take a portion of volume from an existing batch and create a new, separate batch. This is useful when you want to:

  • Create a variant (add fruit, barrel-age a portion, or dry-hop differently)
  • Fulfill a contract brew from a larger batch
  • Experiment with a small portion while keeping the main batch unchanged

How to Split a Batch

  1. Open the parent batch you want to split from
  2. Click Batch Operations in the toolbar
  3. Select Split Batch
  4. Fill in the split details:
    • Facility - Where the new batch will be located
    • Product - The product for the new batch (can be different from parent)
    • Recipe - The recipe to follow for the new batch
    • Batch Number - Auto-generated, but you can modify it
    • Volume - How much to split off from the parent
    • ABV - The ABV of the split portion
  5. Click Save to create the split

After splitting, the volume is deducted from the parent batch and a new child batch is created. Both batches display a link to each other so you can easily navigate between them.

Split Batch Indicators

In your batch list, you'll see branch icons indicating split relationships:

  • Blue branch icon - Parent batch (was split into other batches)
  • Green branch icon - Child batch (was created from a split)

Blending Batches

Blending allows you to combine volume from one batch into another. This is the opposite of splitting - instead of dividing, you're merging. Common uses include:

  • Combining multiple fermenters into a single brite tank
  • Mixing batches to achieve a target flavor profile
  • Consolidating small batches into one for packaging

How to Blend Batches

  1. Open the batch you want to add volume to (the destination)
  2. Click Batch Operations in the toolbar
  3. Select Blend Batch
  4. Search for and select the source batch to pull volume from
  5. Enter the volume to transfer
  6. Click Save to complete the blend

The volume is deducted from the source batch and added to the destination batch. Both batches maintain a record of the blend for traceability.

Undoing a Split

Made a split you need to reverse? If the child batch hasn't progressed too far, you can undo it:

  1. Open the child batch (the one created from the split)
  2. Click Batch Operations
  3. Select Undo Batch Split
  4. Confirm when prompted

The child batch will be deleted and its volume returned to the parent batch.

Requirements for Undoing a Split

You can only undo a split if the child batch has:

  • No packages created
  • No ingredients consumed
  • No yeast harvested

Tracking Split and Blend History

BarSight automatically tracks all split and blend relationships. When viewing a batch that has been split or blended, you'll see an information box showing:

  • Which batches it was split into (for parent batches)
  • Which batch it was split from (for child batches)
  • Which batches were blended together (for blended batches)

Click any linked batch number to navigate directly to that batch.

Best Practices

  • Name split batches clearly - Use batch numbers or names that indicate the relationship (e.g., "Batch 45A", "Batch 45B")
  • Split before consuming ingredients - If you know you'll split, do it early before adding ingredients to make undoing easier if needed
  • Document the reason - Use batch notes to record why you split or blended for future reference
  • Check volumes after blending - Verify the destination batch shows the correct combined volume
